Cypress Players Receive Academic All-State Honors
The Cypress College women's basketball team had three players selected to the 2016 Academic All-State Team. Erika Nilsen, Sam Nguyen, and Phyillis Macharia will represent the Chargers.
The Cypress College women's basketball team had three players selected to the 2016 Academic All-State Team. Erika Nilsen, Sam Nguyen, and Phyillis Macharia will represent the Chargers on this year's Women's Basketball Academic All-State Team after completing a full season of competition with a minimum of 24 units and a GPA of 3.5 or above.
Cypress College is the only Orange Empire Conference School represented on this year's Academic All-State Team and Cypress is 1 of 4 schools with three or more players on the team. Sophomore Erika Nilsen finished last year with a 3.65 GPA while averaging 7.2 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game. Sam Nguyen had the highest GPA on the team at 3.72 while averaging 2.8 points per game and shooting 47.4% from three point range. Phyillis Macharia graduated with a 3.53 GPA and averaged 2.6 points per game.
Erika Nilsen is currently a kinesiology major at Cypress and will return to Coach Mohr's team this season. Sam Nguyen has already used her two seasons of athletic eligibility and graduated from Cypress College this past May. Nguyen is currently attending additional Kinesiology classes at Cypress College before moving on to a four year institution. Phyillis Macharia currently attends Cal State Fullerton as a political science major. Macharia looks forward to joining Phi Sigma Alpha, a political science honors society, this spring.
